Tomball, Texas Information
Located in the northwest Houston metropolitan area, Tomball, Texas is a growing suburban city. In addition to its proximity to the city of Houston, its small town appeal and abundance of attractions and local events makes it an alluring place for people looking to combine the convenience of city living with the slower pace of country life.
Tomball, Texas Details
As the impact of the railroad faded, the oil and gas industry boomed. In 1933, a 100 foot gusher was drilled in the area, and Humble Oil Company negotiated an agreement with the town’s residents for free gas in exchange for drilling rights. More than 100 million barrels of oil and 316 billion cubic feet of natural gas have been produced in the area since that first well. In the decades since, the city has seen periods of extensive growth, such as after World War II and again in the 1970s, with people migrating from Houston to the more pastoral countryside.
Tomball’s population has continued to increase in the ensuing decades. According the the July 2015 U.S. Census Bureau report, the current population is 11,540 people within the city’s 11.77 square miles. The city is a mix of blue and white collar workers. The median household income is $44,086 (2011-2015), 25.6% of the city’s adults have a bachelor’s degree, and 20.16% of the population is between the ages of 35-54. With its short commute to Texas’ biggest city, Tomball has traditionally been home to suburban families looking to escape the hectic pace and congestion of big city life.
While the city has some of the most expensive real estate in Texas, its home values are not comparable with the most expensive real estate in the nation. Median home value is $206,900, with values up 2.5% in the last year. With an average price per square foot of $114, Tomball is more expensive than Houston. The median sales price on current listings is $329,900 and the median rent is $1,650. Over 80% of homes built in the city were built after 1970, and the housing market is predominately small (1-2 bedroom) single-family detached homes. The city also has some of the highest home appreciation rates in the country, 7.99%. In the last decade, real estate in the city appreciated 49.54%, marking it as one of the best long-term real estate investments in the U.S. Short term investment prospects are solid too, with a current annual appreciation rate of 3.37%.
Although the area is suburban, there is no shortage of attractions and local events. The Tomball Museum Center is home to several historic buildings, homes, and museums representing early Texas life. You can relive the railroad’s heyday at the Downtown Railroad Depot, and the Depot also hosts a monthly 2nd Saturday at the Depot event, featuring art, music, and an outdoor movie. The Depot is also the site of festivals year round, such as the Rails and Tails Mudbug Festival, the Honky Tonk Chili Challenge, and the German Christmas Market. Collectors and antiquers will find the historic downtown district full of boutiques, shops, and antique dealers. The city is home to its own independent brewpub, Fire Ant Brewing Company; foodies can discover tea rooms, an old-fashioned pharmacy with a soda jerk, a plethora of good country cooking, and the city is also centrally located for access to many wineries on the Bluebonnet Wine Trail.
For those who enjoy outdoor activities, the beautiful city setting has much to offer. Burroughs Park is made up of over 320 acres with hiking trails, a seven-acre stocked fishing lake, several playgrounds, and an award-winning barbecue pavilion. Equine culture is an important part of the area, and there are many stables, farms, and equestrian centers. Rediscover pioneer life or take a birding walk at Kleb Woods Nature Center and Preserve. The city is also close to towns such as Magnolia, Spring, and The Woodlands, and all their attractions and outdoor recreational opportunities.
